I love doing dog portraits! In the past, I often worked in acrylics, sometimes watercolor, but my new passion is digital portraits. I love everything about the process – drawing and painting WITHOUT the mess! My goal with my portraits is to capture some of that “special delight” we each know so well about our own pets. Working from photographs, I can typically turn around a portrait in about 5-7 days. For dogs, I typically create only the head as that is typically what people capture best in their photographs and is the most expressive part of the dog’s personality (other than body and tail wiggles – which I can’t capture!).
Why dogs only? Well, my personal history is with dogs and I find it easier to capture and recreate their body language and features. I might venture out to other animals later, but for now, dogs will be my focus!
Because I typically am creating from photos, I need three top-quality images. Each should be of the face, head-on if possible, and should not have unusual lighting (not too bright/not too dark). Three images will help me ferret out portions of the facial features that may not be obvious from just one image. You can help me with the process by also letting me know your pet’s “temperament”. Is s/he laid back? Super active? Is there anything about the photos that you can point out that has captured your fur baby especially well? For example, in each of the photos below, the owner’s photos captured great images of their pet’s eyes.
My starting fee for a digital portrait is $35. I do not create/sell/ship outside the Continental US. The size and resolution at which I draw will allow you to use your digital file to size up and down a bit from the image created (typically from an 11″x17″ poster down to a sticker size).
